Balancing Rock Hike In Creston BC

Perched high above the Creston Valley flats, a huge lone rock sits balancing oddly over a small ravine hidden in the forest. How it got there is a mystery, as the mountain it sits on is lush with forest. An interesting sight while hiking this trail rightfully named the balancing rock trail.

Beautiful day for a hike

Waking to a beautiful September day in Creston BC we decided to search for a moderate hike in the area to get some exercise before heading to the beach for a refreshing dip in the Kootney Lake which is only minutes from town.

With +30 temps not uncommon in this gorgeous valley it may have not been the most comfortable hike in the heat but thanks to some shade along the trail which added some relief from the hot sun.

Balancing Rock hike piqued my interest and off we went.

Balancing Rock Hike

The Balancing Rock Hike is a 3.4 km return hike that switchbacks up in and out of the trees on the Western edge of Creston BC. The trail is easy to find using google maps. The trail sits along HWY 3 on the Salmo HWY. Cross the bridge and before heading up the summit there is a road on the left where the trail parking is immediate right.

A wooden sign will guide you to the trail head.

Balancing Rock hike is a moderate trail with a few rough patches, obstacles, and a pretty steady ascend to the top. A wooden bench that sits aside a lone tree is a welcome sight that offers views of the flats and a great chance to catch your breath before carrying on.

The Summit

Once arriving at the huge rock which somewhat balances alongside the trails ravine is the summit of the initial trail although it does continue on leading to a swampy boardwalk that loops back roadside.

The summits are always so rewarding knowing the trail down is quicker and easier than the head up. 🙂
